About Devon, Pennsylvania

Located 20 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Devon is a picturesque census designated place in Easttown Township with the zip code 19333. The area is part of Chester County and provides the perfect blend of suburban tranquility and city proximity.

Devon, Pennsylvania History

The area known as Devon was largely uninhabited following the War for Independence and was crossed by the Conestoga Road that connected Philadelphia with Lancaster. The Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike Company, established in 1792, played a crucial role in the area’s development, with the new turnpike passing through the Harrison lands.

One of the earliest structures in Devon is the Devon Tea House, dating back to 1734. The first post office in Devon opened in 1883, and William Reed Lewis served as the first postmaster. In 1893, a Sunday School building that later became St. John’s Presbyterian Church was erected in Devon, contributing to the area’s community development. By 1895, Devon had grown into a village with over thirty houses.

The Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad came to Devon in 1832 and played a crucial role in facilitating trade and commerce in the area, significantly contributing to Devon’s development as a community. The introduction of the railroad represented a major shift in transportation and economic activity in the region, diverting traffic from the turnpike road, which impacted local inns and contributed to the development of the area.

The late 19th century saw the formation of the Devon Horse Show Association, with its inaugural event in 1896. This show has ascended to world-class status, significantly enriching Devon’s cultural fabric. The early 20th century witnessed the emergence of industries such as Benjamin C. Betner’s paper converting business and the Pennsylvania Fireworks Display Company, further shaping Devon’s economic landscape.

How Can You Tell If Your Plants Have Problems?

Your observations are vital to keeping your landscape plants in good health. Most of the plants we work with are relatively long-lived, and each growing season should be a predictable process of dormancy through full vigor to senescence. Some of the most common symptoms in landscape plants include yellowing or browning of leaves, wilting, or leaf drop.
