The name “Glen Mills” is derived from two paper mills established by the Willcox family in the 19th century, specifically in 1835 and 1846. These mills played a significant role in the nation’s history by producing specialized paper used by the United States government for printing bonds and currency between 1864 and 1878.

While the original Glen Mills are no longer standing, the Newlin Grist Mill, built by Nathaniel Newlin in 1704, remains a notable historical site. This mill, along with a blacksmith shop added to the site in 1975, attracts visitors interested in history and outdoor activities. The Newlin Mill Complex is recognized for its historical importance and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The arrival of the West Chester and Philadelphia Railroad around 1858 marked another key development in the area, linking Glen Mills to Philadelphia and West Chester. Eventually, this line came under the control of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1880. SEPTA operated passenger train services through Glen Mills until 1986. Today, the heritage railway known as the West Chester Railroad continues to operate weekend train services between Glen Mills and West Chester, preserving a slice of the region’s rich transportation history.
