About West Chester PA

West Chester, a vibrant county seat of Chester County, is located 25 miles west of Philadelphia. Encompassing the the zip codes of 19380 and 19382, this borough combines the charm of a small town with easy accessibility to the larger metropolitan area.
In 1762, Phineas Eachus opened a tavern known as Turks Head, and the area was initially known by that name. John Hannum later renamed Turk’s Head to West Chester and began selling lots along Gay Street. The borough was officially incorporated in 1799 from land in Goshen Township.

One of the nation’s first railroads was built in West Chester in 1832. This railroad connection facilitated trade and commerce, significantly contributing to the area’s development. Additionally, the Sharples Separator Works, which was built in the late 19th century and produced cream separators, became a major industry and a major employer in West Chester.
Renowned architect Thomas U. Walter designed several important buildings in West Chester, including the Chester County Courthouse (completed in 1847). His contributions significantly shaped the architectural landscape of the town.

In 1861, during the American Civil War, a training camp named Camp Wayne was established in West Chester. The Union army recruited heavily from the region, and several local regiments were formed and trained at the camp.

In the 20th century, West Chester continued to grow industrially and commercially, and the Sharples Separator Works expanded. West Chester was involved in penicillin production during World War II, which positioned the area as a major center for penicillin production in the country. The town’s population expanded significantly and they saw a growing importance as a commercial and industrial center in Chester County.

Today, West Chester is recognized for its vibrant cultural and entertainment scene, attracting both residents and visitors with its array of restaurants, entertainment venues, and specialty shopping. Annual festivals like the Restaurant Festival and Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade in historic West Chester are popular events for locals and visitors.

Common Plant Problems in West Chester, PA

West Chester landscapes sit in USDA Hardiness Zone 7a (per the updated 2023 USDA map), which supports a wide array of ornamentals, but also has a humid growing season that can allow pests and disease to thrive.

Common issues in the West Chester area include:

  • Spotted lanternfly (SLF) feeding and nuisance impacts (honeydew/sooty mold, plant stress), now widespread across PA
  • Emerald ash borer (EAB) decline in ash trees (dieback, thinning canopy, epicormic shoots, D-shaped exit holes)
  • Boxwood diseases (including blight risk and look-alikes), especially in tight hedges with poor airflow and repeated shearing.
  • Beech leaf disease, increasingly relevant across Pennsylvania, affecting American beech and relatives
  • Spongy moth (formerly gypsy moth) outbreaks that can defoliate oaks and other hosts, stressing trees when repeated
  • Spruce needle cast / needle diseases, a persistent issue on stressed spruces (especially where shade, poor airflow, or repeated wetness occur)
  • Anthracnose and other leaf diseases on shade trees

Frequently Asked Questions About Plant Health Care

How Can You Tell If Your Plants Have Problems?

Your observations are vital to keeping your landscape plants in good health. Most of the plants we work with are relatively long-lived, and each growing season should be a predictable process of dormancy through full vigor to senescence. Some of the most common symptoms in landscape plants include yellowing or browning of leaves, wilting, or leaf drop.

This essentially becomes a biological cost-benefit analysis, which allows solving the pest problem with the least possible collateral damage or ecological harm.

Why is Weed Control Important?

Arborist with face protection spraying plants- FAQs about common invasive weeds - Burkholder PHC

The presence of weeds in ornamental landscapes poses significant challenges, directly impacting the health of preferred plants and diminishing the visual appeal of managed planting beds.

Weeds compete vigorously with desired landscape specimens for essential resources like water, sunlight, and soil nutrients. This competition often results in reduced growth and vigor among desirable plants, limiting their ability to enhance the aesthetic of the landscape.

The negative effects of weed infiltration are particularly pronounced during the initial stages after new landscape plants are installed. Weeds take advantage of the disruption caused by transplanting, quickly establishing themselves and outcompeting newly introduced plants for available resources.

Additionally, many weed species produce chemicals that hinder the root development of ornamental plants. This compounds the competitive advantage of weeds, further impeding the growth and establishment of desired plants.

In summary, the presence of weeds in ornamental landscapes undermines the health of preferred plants and detracts from the overall visual appeal of managed planting beds. Effective weed management strategies are essential to maintain the integrity and attractiveness of ornamental landscapes.
